February 2019

Dear Friends,

February is not the most cheering month of the year. The light is beginning to extend, but the mornings are still dark and forbidding especially with the recent frosts. Fuel bills mount to cope with the damp and cold temperatures and the countryside is not yet vested in its spring garments; yet right at the beginning of this month we have a celebration: Candlemass, which celebrates the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, “a light to enlighten the gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel”. This celebrates the moment when Mary and Joseph took the child to the Temple in Jerusalem, and the old man Simeon, held him in his arms and said those words which we now know as the Nunc Dimittis from the latin:

“At last all powerful Master you give leave to your servant to go in peace according to your promise. For my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared for all the nations. A light to enlighten the Gentiles and give glory to Israel your people.”

[ Luke 2:29 ]

This reminds us that, though the way be dark and dreary, Jesus has kindled a flame in our hearts in baptism, which both guides and warms us inside. Although all is cold and bare outside, we have an assurance of spring within our heart, rather like the Crib shining out from the desolation of winter. The season of Christmas is well and truly over but churches keep their Cribs until the feast of Candlemass to remind us of the Light of the world, that shines forth into our darkened world. This year our Candlemass Celebration will be held on February 3rd at the 10am Sunday Family Mass when traditionally candles are lit and carried in procession in honour of Him who came to be.

With my prayers and good wishes for the coming year,
